National Asparagus Month: 1st – 31st May
National Asparagus Month celebrates the delicious spring vegetable asparagus. Why not use this month to taste the delicious vegetable with pupils. Alternatively they can research the history of the vegetable which dates back to Egyptian times.
Walk in the Woods Month: 1st – 31st May
Walk in the Woods is The Tree Council's month-long festival which aims to encourage everyone to enjoy trees and woods in spring. Across the UK, walks, talks and other events take place in town and countryside throughout May. Walk in the Woods month is a great time to organize an event for your pupils and parents. Pupils can write stories based in a wood or do some leaf drawings to create an inside out wood.
National Vegetarian Week: 19th – 25th May
National Vegetarian Week (NVW) is the annual awareness-raising campaign promoting inspirational vegetarian food and the benefits of a meat-free lifestyle. Why not sign up to the NVW 'Veggie Pledge' and let everybody know what you're committing to do for the Week - this might be anything from trying a veggie meal, to going veggie for the day, week, month, year...or even for life! You can use this week to discuss with pupils about vegetarianism and ask them to consider people’s reasons for being vegetarian.
Walk to School Week: 19th – 23rd May
The Walk to School Campaign for May 2008 is focusing on children exploring their local environment through sound and noise. This year’s theme will link with Noise Action Week, by exploring the links between noise and walking to school. We are asking children to become “Sound Detectives” on their way to school. We want them to explore the world around them in a different way – by listening to the soundscape of their streets as they walk to school. It is amazing the number of different sounds you can hear when you take the time to listen. It is also an opportunity to explore the difference between “good” and “bad” noises (for instance police sirens).
